The village of Nietoperek
The village of Nietoperek (Lubuskie voivodship) is a place worth visiting, especially "in a package" with the Międzyrzecki Fortified Region, the remains of which are located in Nietoperka and co-create the Nietoperek Nature Reserve. Nietoperek is located 6 km from Pniewo, which houses the Museum of Fortifications and Bats, and thus – the entrance to the underground routes of Międzyrzecki Fortified Region, open to visitors.
There are several interesting places in Nietoperek that are worth visiting, including:
Nietoperek Nature Reserve – is part of the underground corridors and bunkers of the Międzyrzecz Fortified Region, where bats winter. From October 15 to April 15, the reserve is inaccessible to visitors due to the protection of 30,000 hibernating bats, representatives of twelve species – it is one of the largest wintering grounds for these animals in Central Europe. Therefore, you can visit the reserve only in the spring and summer season, from April 16 to October 14.
Stone lapidarium commemorating the Bismarck Tower – a tower from 1914, one of many built in Poland and Germany in the 19th and 20th centuries, praising the German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. The tower in Nietoperek no longer exists, but in its place there are several dozen boulders from this building, with inscriptions in German.
A fragment of the Charlottenhof palace and park complex – comes from the beginning of the 20th century, it is located one kilometer south-west of Nietoperka. A birch alley leads to it.
Bunkers of the Międzyrzecki Fortified Region – visiting the Fortification Museum in Pniewo, tourists have the opportunity to see mainly the underground part of the Międzyrzecki Fortified Region. In order to see the above-ground remains and bunkers of this fortification, go to Nietoperka.
Chiropterological Educational and Research Station of the Complex of Landscape Parks of the Lubuskie Voivodeship – now only from the outside you can see the building where bats were once protected. A few years ago it was bought by private individuals, and today its function is performed by the Nietoperek Nature Reserve.
